EGU General Assembly 2025

EGU 2025

Vienna, Austria

The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is the leading organisation for Earth, planetary and space science research in Europe, fostering geoscience research, alongside applied research that addresses key societal and environmental challenges. The EGU’s vision is to realise a sustainable and just future for humanity and for the planet.

Every year, the EGU organises its General Assembly: a large event, attracting geoscientists from all over the world (in 2004, over 21,000 attended the meeting). The sessions cover a wide range of topics, including volcanology, planetary exploration, the Earth’s internal structure and atmosphere, climate, as well as energy and resources.

The EGU General Assembly aims to provide a forum for scientists and early career researchers to present their work and discuss their idea with experts.

In 2025, the GA will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 27 April to 2 May 2025, and LifeWatch ERIC is proud to attend, representing ENVRI-Hub NEXT in the ENVRI Community Booth.

Jacco Konjin, from LifeWatch ERIC’s Virtual Laboratory and Innovations Centre (Netherlands), will co-organise the session ESSI2.2, “Powering Environmental Research: Success Stories of Collaboration and Data Sharing Across Disciplines“.

The session has the objective to gather real-world examples from environmental and climate research across multi- and interdisciplinary domains, data product developers, data sciences and engineers.

Contributions to the session are welcome, presenting aspects of data analytics, visualisation, data collection and quality control from data-driven research, as well as use cases and innovative projects.

ENVRI-Hub NEXT project Kick-Off Meeting

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 6-8 February 2024

From Tuesday, 6 February 2024 to Thursday, 8 February 2024, EGI (consortium leader) is hosting the kick-off meeting of the Horizon Europe Project ENVRI-Hub NEXT.

ENVRI-Hub NEXT involves 21 European partners and builds on the legacy of the three previous European projects (ENVRI, ENVRI-PLUS and ENVRI-FAIR) bringing together a community of Environmental Research Infrastructures, projects, networks and other diverse stakeholders interested in environmental Research Infrastructure matters.

The overarching goal of ENVRI-Hub NEXT is to create a robust conceptual and technical framework that will empower the ENVRI Science Cluster to provide interdisciplinary science-based services. These services will support climate change research, including the development of mitigation and adaptation measures and strategies and the assessment of the climate change risks. Through this framework, ENVRI-Hub NEXT will facilitate the integration of the environmental sciences community into the European Open Science Cloud, guided by the science-based framework of Essential Climate Variables. In direct answer to the Call Topic, ENVRI-Hub NEXT strives to expand the frontiers of multidisciplinary environmental sciences by fostering operational synergies between environmental research infrastructures and developing and utilising complementarities in their data and services provision. The joint forces of ENVRI and e-infrastructures allow for the integration of cutting-edge information technology, alignment with the EOSC architecture, and efficient resource allocation for the advancement of a more integrated, productive, and globally competitive ENVRI Science Cluster.

“FAIR environmental data for EOSC and the World: Engineering the ENVRI-Hub”, an RDA co-located event

Engineering the ENVRI-Hub

Gothenburg and online, 20 March 2023.

The power of FAIRness

Good-quality data is essential to enable successful global climate action. The European Environmental Research Infrastructures, organised in the ENVRI Community, hold a wealth of data on Earth systems critical to tackling global climate challenges. Within the ENVRI-FAIR, a Horizon 2020 project in which LifeWatch ERIC is partner, the ENVRI Community created the ENVRI-Hub, a portal of services to ensure the availability, accessibility and interoperability of this trove of European environmental data.

Meet the ENVRI-Hub

The ENVRI Community is proud to introduce the ‘ENVRI-Hub’ concept and its achievements during this co-located event. The ENVRI-Hub is the central gateway to FAIR environmental data and services the European environmental research infrastructures offer. It offers a community-built platform that combines a service catalogue, a knowledge base, information on training resources that support service providers and users, and a virtual research environment with several initial science demonstrators, all accessible through a single access interface. Through the ENVRI-Hub, the ENVRI Community directly contributes to the European Open Science Cloud, opening up this wealth of data for exploitation to all scientific users, policymakers, and private partners.

Real cases for real users

This event will demonstrate several aspects of the technical and data architecture behind the ENVRI-Hub, from assessing the FAIRness of the ENVRIs and identifying the gaps to harmonising technical implementations across different infrastructures. It will also illustrate its value in various real-world science demonstrators. Discussions will follow with a panel of experts about the integration into EOSC, the current strengths and limitations of the ENVRI-Hub and possible future developments.
