Deal with a huge amount of databases and information from sensors spanning from weather to marine, and earth sciences, make them available for the scientist community, create ways to mix them on an appropriate and useful way for researchers different needs providing analytical and modelling capabilities and create an environment that facilitates collaboration through virtual laboratories, overcoming the fragmentation and blowing up any physical barriers, are current challenges for LifeWatch.
Researchers and representatives from international and European organizations and FP7 projects exposed during the first day of the meeting the main ways how they could bring significant value to LifeWatch in different areas. This session was chaired by the adviser for ICT-Core developments Jesús Marco de Lucas.
Among others, professor Wouter Los, from Amsterdam University, presented Creative-B, which aims to enhance the coordination between some international infrastructures related to biodiversity in order to have a global knowledge about environmental changes around the world.
This project can be coupled in the LifeWatch composition layer. Creative-B began in October 2011 and will run for 3 years and will promote the exchange of expertise on technological network construction between the different partners and encourage coordinated actions to the management of their facilities.
In addition, Clint García, a representative of the Environmental Information Network of Andalusia, Rediam, presented the potential contribution of his organization based on its expertise in combining different sources of biotic and abiotic data for environmental management.
This platform, that belongs to the regional government of Andalusia, was held in 2007 and since then it has been developed different web tools that allows access to the interoperable geographic information services. In this respect, there are from thematic environmental maps and thematic information packages comprising GIS layers and associated documents, to statistics and indicators on environmental variables and human activity affecting the environment.
